HUMAN
CHANGE

What makes a person become someone they have never been before?
EXPLORE THE WORK
I’VE SPENT MY LIFE INSIDE CHANGE.
I didn't begin by studying human change. I lived inside it.
PRO BASEBALL. FILMMAKING. ADDICTION. RECOVERY. FATHERHOOD. REINVENTION.
Who do you become when the person you've been can no longer take you where you're going?

ARCHIVAL FRAGMENT / AUGUST 31, 2001
“Dedicate yourself to excellence.”
THE MOUND
Before I studied identity, I lost one.
For more than eight years, professional baseball was the center of my world. The mound gave me structure, purpose, pressure... and an answer to the question of who I was.
Then came the injuries. Four arm surgeries. And eventually, the game ended.
What disappeared wasn't simply a career. It was the person I had spent my life becoming.
Who are you when the identity that carried you this far can carry you no further?

THE SET
I traded the mound for the movies.
I left one world built around performance and entered another. Filmmaking became the next arena—stories, sets, pressure, personalities, uncertainty. Over the years, I Produced or Executive Produced more than twenty films.
The uniform changed. The underlying pursuit didn’t. I was still building. Still performing. Still becoming.

Then I became
someone’s father.
“For years, I had learned to measure a life through achievement — innings, contracts, films, the next thing built.
Fatherhood introduced a different measure. Two people entered my life who did not need the athlete or the producer. They needed me.
Careers changed. Identities changed. Life became complicated. They kept growing. And somewhere inside raising them, I began to understand something I wouldn’t fully appreciate until much later.”
Not every part of us is supposed to be reinvented. Some things become the reason we do.
THE BOTTOM

THE JOURNEY BEGINS.
Day four. I finally wrote the words I had spent years avoiding.
“I needed help.”

SURRENDER NOW.
THE REBUILD
Change became a practice.

I stopped waiting to become someone different and began building him. Recovery wasn't a destination. It was repetition. Discipline. Identity reconstructed through ordinary choices, made again and again.
Everything requires maintenance.
Brick by brick.
Why do we keep choosing what we know is hurting us?
When does the person you had to become to survive become the person you need to leave behind?
How much of who you are was actually chosen by you?
What if suffering isn’t the interruption of your life—but the thing asking you to change it?
Who do you have to stop being to become someone you’ve never been before?
THE WORK
Six territories. One question: what changes a human being?
IDENTITY
Who we believe ourselves to be—and what happens when that story no longer works.
MEANING
What makes suffering worth enduring, achievement worth pursuing, and a life worth building.
PERFORMANCE
Discipline, pressure, failure, mastery—and the distance between what we’re capable of and what we actually do.
RECOVERY
Not returning to who we were. Learning how to become someone who can live differently.
RELATIONSHIPS
The people who shape us, reveal us, wound us, regulate us, and sometimes help us find our way back.
SELF-MASTERY
Learning what governs us—and deciding what deserves to.
THE WRITING
Some lives are lived twice. Once while they’re happening. Again when we try to understand them.
For more than twenty-five years, I’ve been writing through ambition, failure, fatherhood, addiction, recovery, identity and change. What began as journals became an archive. The archive became an inquiry. And the inquiry is becoming a body of work.
1999–2001 — THE EARLY PAGES

2022 — SURRENDER

“I’ll be working on this for a very long time. Forever.”
BEFORE THERE WAS A BOOK, THERE WERE PAGES.
For more than twenty-five years, I wrote without knowing what the pages would become.
“I’m finally there. I accept the fact that I’m defeated. Tired of being tired — and powerless.”

THE INQUIRY
Speaking is a practice of inquiry. It is the act of holding space for the questions that have no answers yet.
IDENTITY
How we construct the self through performance and the weight of expectation.
MEANING
The search for purpose in a world where the person you’ve been no longer takes you where you’re going.
RECOVERY
Practice as a discipline. The maintenance of a new life built on surrender and reinvention.
The person you’ve been got you here.
The question is who you become next.
